A Bit About Micro.blog (And Why I Backed It)

In a deviation from the typical type of content I write, I want to share a bit about Micro.blog in case others have yet to hear of it, why I backed it, and what I hope it aims to do for the web.

About Micro.blog: The Kickstarter Page

In short, the whole purpose of Micro.blog is to provide an easy place for people to both write and own their short form content.

From the Kickstarter page shown above:

Today, most writing instead goes into a small number of centralized social networking sites, where you can’t move your content, advertisements and fake news are everywhere, and if one of these sites fails, your content disappears from the internet. Too many sites have gone away and taken our posts and photos with them.

And the service is targeting services Twitter, Facebook, and other similar sites. Don’t get me wrong: I like and use Twitter, but I also know that whatever it is I post there is up to the discretion of the service on if the content persists.

But there’s more to it than that. At the time of this writing, there’s a week to go in the Kickstarter, though it’s far surprised its goal, there are some things about the service I’m excited about and want to share.

Programmers Should Blog (Including You)

I’ve long held the belief that programmers should blog (if they feel so inclined, of course).

Granted, I write about how to do things programmatically using WordPress, and I plan to get back to doing that later this week with the new year back in full swing. But I stumbled across a post on The Practical Developer this morning that I couldn’t help but offer my thoughts on it.

The post, Untold Benefits of a Software Blog, is something that’s relevant to any of us in the programming space but I share it primarily for those of us in the WordPress space. (After all, that’s where I’m focused, right?)

Programmers Should Blog

And I share it because I thought I’d share a bit about what the blog has afforded me over the last few years of writing and sharing content on this site.

2017 Plans: Blogging, Products, Consulting, and More

Though yesterday’s post was talking about a new endeavor (or even just a single post, at the moment), it was in no place meant to ignore any of my 2017 plans I’m looking to accomplish this year.

This includes content around:

  1. Start Here,
  2. A redesign and restructuring of this site,
  3. Products,
  4. Consulting,
  5. And more.

So before I get back to the usual type of content about which I write and as we are normally want to do, I thought it worth sharing what I’m looking to do in the long term over the next 365 days.

If nothing else, it’s going to be fun to look back at this post and see just how much was done and how much was not.

Using Medium: An Experiment with Writing

Using Medium is something that I’ve been wavering on doing for some time now. I mean, it’s not that I don’t understand how it works or why people opt to use to it.

Using Medium: The Medium Homepage

But I like WordPress; I’m a fan of self-hosted solutions, and I’m a fan of data ownership. So why would I bother with anything else?

Granted, Medium offers the ability to export that you own so you can take it elsewhere.

That’s a plus, right?

But there are a few reasons I’ve opted to give this whole thing a try. (And no, I’m not going to be duplicating content from this site to Medium – this is something completely different).

A Look Towards 2017 (Starting with 2016)

With this being the last post of the year (and I look towards 2017), it’s easy to want to fall into the standard retrospective post. And there will be some of that.

Initially, I planned to keep this relatively short, but that didn’t work out. But I tried to make it as much of a quick read as possible. That is, everything is in a bulleted list.

Towards 2017: Not that kind of bullet.

No, not that kind of bullet. (I’ve been playing too much Super Mario Run!)

Here’s what I’m going to cover:

  1. There are a few things I want to mention regarding the past year. Nothing too deep or analytical, but just some of the highlights.
  2. There are plans for 2017 that I’d like to share that may or may not be of interest to you that I’m going to share.
  3. I have a few future endeavors around writing (on a different platform, no less!) that I will share.

Now that you know, you can decide whether or not you want to read more or not. So here goes.
