About a month and a half ago, I was hanging out at WordCamp Atlanta and I was speaking on the topic of how to Level-Up Your WordPress Development Skills.

To summarize, I covered the following topics:

The video has finally been published on WordCamp.tv and I’m sharing it as well as the accompanying slides below, as well.

How To Level-Up Your WordPress Development Skills

The video clocks at 40 minutes and this includes the introduction, the talk, and the question and answer session following the talk.

The Video

In the video, I cover the following topics:

  • The WordPress APIs: How To Find Them, What They Are, and How To Use Them
  • The Coding Standards: What They Are, Why You Should Always Follow Them
  • The Importance of Finding a Niche: Know Your Target Market, Strategies For Pursuing It
  • Educating Yourself: You’re Never Done, Tips on How To Do So

The Slides

If you’re interested in following along, you can use the slides below as they correspond to what I used during the talk.

Future Talks

Overall, I really enjoyed speaking at WordCamp, but I’d have to say that I enjoyed meeting and chatting with others after the talk.

It’s clear that there’s more than an abundance of interest in increasing their WordPress development skills – hopefully the talk provided a guide and some guardrails for what to do, what to avoid, and things to practice when working to level-up your own skills.

As I look forward to the next year, I’m eager to begin giving other talks on the subject and those tangentially related.

I’ve already got a few things planning for the coming months, and my team and 8BIT and I are looking to provide similar events here in Atlanta later this year.
