My Priorities (Balancing Work and Home)

For an upcoming project, Andy Adams and I are working to build [what I consider to be] a really cool site for a client. Details of the project aside, he and I had a really interesting conversation earlier this week the details of which I thought were worth sharing. Specifically, we talk about developer pragmatism and balancing work with our home lives.

To some degree, I almost consider this to be a sort of letter-to-my-20-year-old-self, but I think it’s relevant to anyone who may be young and starting out in the field of development or who may be about to experience a major life change for whatever reason.

For those not wanting to read the entire post, the gist of it is this:

The ability to sit at your computer and consume as much information as possible regarding programming, software development, and so on is likely to change as you experience major changes in your life.

The thing is, this can sound like a major bummer if you’re someone on the cusp of a major life change. But it’s not and I thought I’d share why – at least as far as my experience allows me to do so.

Pressware Needs an Intern (Want to Work on Some Projects With Me?)

For those of you who have followed this blog for sometime, you’re likely aware that I make a living building solutions for others using WordPress – all of this is done under my company, Pressware.

From the landing page, you’ll notice that there are two other team members – Stephen and Nathaniel – both of whom are responsible for other tasks on the team (and we’re even shifting roles a little bit more very soon, but that’s beside the point).

Though I’ve almost always done exclusively project-based work, I’m also looking into branching out into products, as well. I doubt this is a surprise. The thing is, in order to help expand the business into both products and services, I need a little bit of help in growing the business.

To that end, I’m looking for an intern.

An Image Widget for WordPress

One of the best parts about being someone who uses WordPress on a daily basis both for personal use and in doing work for others is the ability to create solutions to problems that you encounter throughout your day-to-day.

Obviously, some problems are more complex than others and require more elaborate solutions, whereas others are easier problems that still may call for a simpler solution, but a solution nonetheless.

Case in point: In a few recent projects, I’ve needed to integrate an image widget that allows users to easily upload images into sidebars and/or widgetized areas of their blog. The challenge, however, is that there are multiple ways to go about doing this.

So my first take at implementing a solution for this particular problem comes in the form of the Pressware Image Widget for WordPress.

Pressware: Just Another WordPress Company

Since launching The Pressware Shop a few months ago, I’ve also been working to blog a few times a week about what’s going on with the projects that are in development and about some of the core philosophies that I’m trying to follow as I work to introduce this second arm of the company.

The Pressware Shop

When Pressware first started, it was primarily services-oriented. That is, it was primarily made up of doing contract work (which I love doing) with a few hobby projects on the side; however, as time has passed, I’ve been able to add to the team to continue to service-oriented side of things while also focusing on building products.

But there are already so many WordPress companies already available, why bother starting another one?

The Ultimate Goals of the Pressware Shop

About a month ago, I talked about some of the projects that were in the Pressware Pipeline two of which included the following:

  1. Mayer
  2. “The Pressware eCommerce Gateway,” my choice of words (not as elegant as they should’ve been I suppose :).

As of today, these two projects are officially launched and I couldn’t be more excited. That is, Mayer is now available for self-hosted installations, and The Pressware Shop is now open.
