Remember at the end of 2019, I talked about reviving some of the Must Read articles that I used to write way-back-when?

Though the month isn’t over yet, I’ve got plenty of stuff that I’ve found useful to fill the first month of the year and thought I’d go ahead and share it here.

Reading for January 2020

The following comes from a variety of sources. Some are from colleagues, some are from friends, some from Twitter, some from my own reading. Whatever. The point is there’s lots to share so here we go:

  • 🎣 wp-contained-hooked. Lazily instantiate objects from dependency injection container to WordPress hooks (actions and filters)
  • 🌊 kanye.rest. A free REST API for random Kanye West quotes (Kanye as a Service).
  • 🐺 Wolff. Ridiculously small PHP framework.
  • 🙅🏻‍♂️ The No Code Delusion. “…the movement that [says] you can write business logic and even entire applications without having the training of a software developer…”
  • 🖥 When XML beats JSON: UI layouts. “These comments imply that JSON is the “one true file format” that should be used for everything, but we don’t believe there’s such a thing.”
  • 👔 Google Style Guides. Every major open-source project has its own style guide: a set of conventions (sometimes arbitrary) about how to write code for that project. It is much easier to understand a large codebase when all the code in it is in a consistent style.
  • 🔎 Screenie. Search the text inside your images.
  • 🍎 The (Unofficial) Apple Archive. “Dedicated to those who stayed up late and got up early to get on the family iMac to recreate event slides in Keynote.”
  • 📝 Dear New Developer. It’s a good idea to learn SQL (which stands for structured query language).

Maybe you’ll find this stuff useful or interesting or both. Either way, this is something that I’m looking to start doing more on the regular since there’s so much stuff that comes across our RSS feeds, inboxes, Twitter feeds, and so on.
